UNESCO World Heritage · Why It Matters
The UNESCO World Heritage List recognises cultural and natural places considered to possess outstanding universal value. A castle or palace may qualify not only for its architectural beauty, but also for its historical associations, innovative design, cultural influence or relationship to a larger landscape. Some inscriptions encompass an entire residence ensemble, including buildings, parks and civic spaces, rather than one standalone castle. World Heritage recognition encourages international cooperation in preservation, research and responsible management, but it does not mean every structure is untouched or that public access is guaranteed. Understanding the reasons for an inscription is as important as admiring the monument itself. This collection explores the historical stories and architectural layers that make these places significant beyond their local setting.
