Historical origins

12th century: A fortress arose above Wernigerode.

A turning point

16th century: Renaissance reconstruction changed the medieval castle.

A castle shaped by a future vice-chancellor

The great 1862–1885 rebuilding reflected the political rise of Count Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode, later German vice-chancellor. Architect Carl Frühling gave the building varied silhouettes and elaborate interiors. The result expressed status within the new German Empire as much as nostalgia for the Middle Ages.
