TOPCASTLES / HIGHLIGHTS

What to see

Origins

1246: Braunfels castle was first mentioned.

A turning point

1845: Prince Ferdinand started Neo-Gothic rebuilding.

War, fire and rebuilding

The Thirty Years' War and destructive fire in 1679 interrupted the castle's earlier development. Surviving rooms and later renovations belong to different rebuilding campaigns.

Baroque life behind medieval walls

Around 1700 Count Wilhelm Moritz reshaped Braunfels as a Baroque residence. This was a change in comfort and ceremony, not simply a new decorative façade.

The towers of Historicism

Prince Ferdinand's work from 1845 and Prince Georg's later reconstruction shaped the fairytale-like silhouette. The towers should not all be dated to medieval times.

Edwin Oppler and the New Keep

Prince Georg and Princess Emanuela's transformation by 1885 included historicist work by architect Edwin Oppler. The New Keep replaced the earlier Luginsland tower; the present outline therefore contains a distinctly late-nineteenth-century architectural statement.
