What to notice

Compare the tower's mass with the more articulated residential ranges and the chapel. Several courtyards at different levels reveal how construction followed the rock. Read restored surfaces and surviving medieval details together: the castle is both an old structure and a history of conservation choices.

Turning points

A chapel phase is dated to 1192, while major thirteenth-century work reshaped the tower and stone house. In 1354 the property passed to the counts of Oettingen. War damage in 1648 was followed by restoration; twentieth-century repairs and reconstruction again changed the appearance.

Reading the architecture

The Katzenturm, palas and St Lawrence chapel are the principal architectural anchors. The chapel's medieval wall paintings and the masonry sequence deserve more attention than a generic label of “Staufer castle”. The palas was reconstructed in 1977, so its present silhouette must be distinguished from untouched medieval fabric.

TOPCASTLES / PEOPLE

People & power

People and power

The early Katzenstein family, the Hürnheim lords and the counts of Oettingen belong to different phases. Their succession connects local ministerial and noble society with larger territorial families. No single dynasty built every visible part; later owners also repaired, adapted or replaced older work.

TOPCASTLES / LEGENDS

Legends vs evidence

Stories and evidence

The castle's name invites playful cat stories, but a name is not proof of a founding legend. The secure narrative comes from named families, masonry and written records. Where an early building date is a research hypothesis, it should remain a hypothesis rather than becoming an exact inauguration day.
