TOPCASTLES / HIGHLIGHTS

What to see

Origins

1258: A castle altar is documented at Ronneburg.

A turning point

1621: A fire damaged sections of the complex.

The keep and inner defensive ring

Medieval stone defences grew in stages; the fourteenth-century core and later stair tower document different generations of construction.

A Renaissance outer bailey

Between 1538 and 1555 the extensive forecourt was created. The design reflects both additional defensive needs and the organisation of a growing residential complex.

Water supply as engineering

The castle's deep well and lifting mechanism show how a high fortified site could remain supplied during a siege, rather than depending on the plain below.
