What the buildings reveal

The keep’s drop-shaped plan is a distinctive feature, not a perfectly round cylinder. Its thick walls and surviving medieval half-dome contrast with the low enclosure fragments and modern visitor buildings. A deep well cut through rock supplied the household. Reading keep and water system together moves the story from defensive appearance to the practical question of how people could remain on a defended hill.

Reading the surviving fabric

The keep’s drop-shaped plan is a distinctive feature, not a perfectly round cylinder. Its thick walls and surviving medieval half-dome contrast with the low enclosure fragments and modern visitor buildings. A deep well cut through rock supplied the household. Reading keep and water system together moves the story from defensive appearance to the practical question of how people could remain on a defended hill.

Spur enclosure with distinctive drop-shaped keep and deep rock-cut well

Archaeology shows successive outer-bailey walls, beginning with a palisade before stone enclosures. The exact medieval entrance and drawbridge position remain uncertain even though a modern path is obvious. This is a useful reminder that today’s circulation does not automatically reproduce the original approach. The forester’s house, exposed foundations and restored well each need their own date and interpretation.

TOPCASTLES / PEOPLE

People & power

Margarethe and the Ravensberg inheritance

The Calvelage-Ravensberg counts used the castle as their ancestral seat until the male line ended in 1346. Through Margarethe of Ravensberg the county became tied to Jülich-Berg. The castle consequently belonged to a larger, geographically scattered lordship. Its later relative decline should be read against that wider political map, not as proof that the hill suddenly lost every administrative or military use.

TOPCASTLES / LEGENDS

Legends vs evidence

Approximate beginnings and the reconstructed visitor route

The early foundation range remains approximate, while the 1141 reference is a different kind of evidence. Well-related traditions should likewise remain distinct from measured masonry and surviving machinery. The foundation offers keep and well-house access through its current guided arrangements; grounds and catering have separate hours. A visible tower does not imply it is always open for independent climbing.
