TOPCASTLES / WHY VISIT

Why visit

What makes this castle distinctive

An octagonal brick tower preserves the memory of a repeatedly contested Pomeranian-Brandenburg castle and lost residence.

TOPCASTLES / HIGHLIGHTS

What to see

What the buildings reveal

The octagonal brick upper tower rises from a squarer base. This change of geometry is its most useful identifying feature. Compare the standing vertical landmark with low walls and vaulted remains to reconstruct the difference between a strong tower and the vanished residential complex. Brick joints and modern repairs should be inspected as separate layers rather than treated as equally old fabric.

Reading the surviving fabric

Octagonal brick tower, wall fragments and vaulted remains

The castle’s setting concerns control of a frontier landscape, but not every attractive explanation of its earliest origins can be proved. Municipal and association histories agree more closely on late medieval and early modern changes than on the first timber phase. That uneven evidence matters: later documented households should not be used to invent a named builder for a much older structure.

People & power

Wussow and Werner von der Schulenburg

The Wussow family of Stettin held the pledged estate and adapted a castle building into a residence in 1393 according to the municipality. Later Werner von der Schulenburg emerged as a major holder. In 1479 he received castle, residence, town and appurtenances as a fief. The site combined military control with agricultural land and the income of a surrounding estate.

Legends vs evidence

The missing residence and the earliest evidence

The local association and tourist information provide current access arrangements. A tower visit does not mean that every vault or wall fragment is freely accessible. Historical views can help imagine the lost palace but must be labelled by date. This account uses documented changes and surviving masonry rather than attaching an unsupported ghost story to the empty spaces.
