What to see

What the buildings reveal

The round tower has an enclosed vaulted lower level and an upper storey now open to the sky. Separate entrances reveal that circulation between fighting levels was not organised like a normal house staircase. Gun openings, wall thickness and the surrounding curtain work together. Reading these elements as a system explains how a small footprint could support more than one type of weapon and defended space.

Reading the surviving fabric

The round tower has an enclosed vaulted lower level and an upper storey now open to the sky. Separate entrances reveal that circulation between fighting levels was not organised like a normal house staircase. Gun openings, wall thickness and the surrounding curtain work together. Reading these elements as a system explains how a small footprint could support more than one type of weapon and defended space.

Round battery tower with thick walls and surrounding enclosure remains

The low enclosure remains are easily overlooked beside the massive tower. They matter because an artillery position needed protected surroundings as well as a firing point. A nearby filled shaft has been interpreted as well or cistern, suggesting provision for sustained occupation by a garrison. Its precise form remains uncertain; it should not be promoted into evidence of a luxurious permanent residence.

TOPCASTLES / PEOPLE

People & power

Hans von Trotha and the Palatine military network

Hans von Trotha, the Palatine elector’s military servant, had the battery tower built in 1484 while strengthening Berwartstein. His investment links the site to late-medieval territorial rivalry and the increasing use of guns. Its purpose was deterrence and defence rather than domestic comfort. A substantial military structure could thus be essential to a castle system without accommodating a lord and family throughout the year.

TOPCASTLES / LEGENDS

Legends vs evidence

The name and the supposed secret connection

The name’s origin is unresolved: a modern national-border explanation cannot simply be projected back to 1484. A concealed connection to Berwartstein is also reported, but remains a hypothesis rather than a verified traversable tunnel. The tower is viewed externally; do not promise interior admission. These limits preserve a substantial military story without filling gaps with romance or unsafe visitor assumptions.
