Reading the surviving fabric

The plan combines an upper and lower court on a ridge protected by steep slopes and a neck ditch. A tower-like residential core preserves medieval substance, while later ranges respond to different expectations of comfort and official work. Read the relation of these spaces before assigning a period to a roof or window. Rebuilt façades can respect a historical outline while containing substantial modern material, and their historical value is different from that of untouched masonry.

The water system also changes how the castle’s European significance is understood. Military histories emphasise walls, but a long-distance supply required survey, gradients, watertight pipes and maintenance. It belongs to the history of technical knowledge and aristocratic investment as much as to fortification. Interpretations of its components must follow archaeological evidence; a tunnel associated with water management is not automatically a secret escape route, however attractive that story might sound.

People & power

Dietrich III and Ernst Stahl

Dietrich is associated with late-medieval water engineering; Stahl with the modern hostel reconstruction. Their contributions belong to very different building campaigns.

TOPCASTLES / LEGENDS

Legends vs evidence

A water tunnel, not a presumed escape passage

Archaeology identifies a water-supply function. A secret escape-route interpretation needs separate evidence and is not asserted here.

TOPCASTLES / FAQ

Questions before you visit

What is certain, and what remains open?

Use separate dates for the family, the castle and the hostel. Published visitor summaries sometimes compress them into a single age claim, whereas research distinguishes an early family reference, the 1273 castle record and modern rebuilding. The same caution applies to pipe dating. Interior visits are on request according to regional tourism information; the hostel and tunnel are distinct facilities, and access to one does not establish access to the other.
