Architecture & design

Reading the surviving fabric

The terrain supplies the key to the plan. Steep slopes protected three sides of the spur, leaving the landward approach as the principal vulnerable direction. A neck ditch separates the main castle from the outer court; the present bridge makes that division easy to understand. The two round towers give the silhouette its identity. Their imposing appearance should be read with the topography, rather than treated as interchangeable decorative turrets.

Spur castle with two round towers, neck ditch and later residential wings

Research has identified thirteenth-century fabric, but the full building sequence remains incompletely investigated. A major residential phase followed around and after 1720; the modern wing is another distinct layer. Drawings by Renier Roidkin help historians compare the earlier arrangement with later changes. Such images are evidence of a particular historical view, not permission to reconstruct every missing room or assume that present interiors retain the same arrangement.

TOPCASTLES / FAQ

Questions before you visit

What is certain, and what remains open?

Published summaries differ on the starting year and on the numbering of the founder named Dietrich. Here the safer formulation is an early-thirteenth-century foundation associated with Dietrich von Gevore-Bilstein, documented in 1225. No specific supernatural tradition is added without evidence. The active hostel is also not a permanently open palace museum: official tourism information allows courtyard visits when the gate is open, while accommodation and indoor access have their own conditions.
